This is the 2nd of several Vancouver 2010 Olympics photoessays created by Kris Krüg.

Vancouver is filled with energy now that 2010 Winter Olympic Games has officially started.

The last week has been filled with the excited fervor of the last month and anticipation of the upcoming weeks.

Here is a photographic look into the last week of adventure and celebrations, before the officially opening of the Games in Vancouver.

The Olympic torch was carried downhill on the Blackcomb mountain by world champion and olympiad Steve Podborski. Steve won a bronze medal in the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid. Currently he is part of the VANOC and works within International Relations.

Premier Gordon Campbell seemingly is Canada's number one fan. Campbell has travelled around Canada for the entire length of the torch relay. Here he is handing out coveted British Columbia Olympic pins to fans at the Whistler Torch Celebration.

Willie Lewis - Squamish Nation

Vancouver is part of the Coast Salish territories and has a Four Host First Nation welcoming committee as part of the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games. Willie Lewis, dressed in a traditional Aborginal outfit, was part of the Whistler Torch Relay Celebration.

Static Photography had the chance to hang out in Whistler for the weekend with Chris Wheeler who had been following the torch relay through all of Canada. We had the chance to do some zip trekking with him! Our longest run was 2200 m. :)

The Olympic Torch had an extended route through all of Vancouver with the relay going through all of the neighborhoods in Vancouver. The Vancouver city council accompanied by Mayor Gregor Robertson welcomed the torch when it came to City Hall

Vancouver Olympiad Lori Fung, with her gold medal, was present when the Olympic Torch came to the Vancouver City Hall. Fung was the first gold medalist awarded in the sport of Rhythmic Gymnastics during the 1984 Summer Olympics which were held in Los Angeles, CA.

This is the first Olympic Games where people are full-on involved with technology and the internet. Many fans often have out their own cameras to capture their memories themselves. With this sort of documentation present for the Vancouver Winter Olympics, some of the best Olympic news coverage will be coming from the internet!

There are many different pavilions popping up all over Vancouver with all sorts of awesome installations and displays. This is a touch screen graffitti media installation in the DigiBC part of the BC Pavilion. Here one of the creators is having fun creating some interactive art.

Mayor Gregor Robertson has been a very busy man during the preparations for the Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Here he is outside of the W2 Media and Culture House in the DTES. He was the speaker at the ribbon-cutting of this independent media house which opened to the public.

The beautiful Olympic Athlete Village sits on the waters' edge of the False Creek. There was a bit of controversy when the athletes from Australia hung up their official Aussie flag, which is a copyrighted image. Despite some grievances with the IOC, Vancouver fought to keep the flag up!

Bombardier, the company who designed the Olympic Torch for the Vancouver Winter Olympics, also designed the Olympic Line, a train that runs from the Main Street Skytrain Station to Granville Island. Bombardier has given Vancouver two of their streetcars, on loan from Brussels, Belgium. The Olympic Line is a 60 day demonstration project so get a ride while you can!

Visitors have been packing into Vancouver from all over the world for the 2010 Winter Olympics. This group of women associated with Ukrainian team were photographed on their way into the Opening Ceremony on February 12th.

Occupied Vancouver

Another type of visitor that has been sighted in Vancouver is the increase in public security, with the influx of police from other provinces. These police officers are in fact from four different Canadian provinces!

It was very exciting to watch the crowd gather for the Opening Ceremony at the German Saxony House. The place was packed with locals and visitors for the three hour televised event. Of course, everyone went nuts when the Canadian team was ushered into BC Place.

The biggest secret of the 2010 Winter Olympics was the identity of the person who was to light the final torch in Vancouver during the official welcoming of the Games. Wayne Gretzky ended up carrying the torch from BC Place to the final outdoor giant torch at Waterfront station in a great fanfare. The night ended with a fireworks-filled sky.

The 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games have only just begun. The city of Vancouver has ahead of it three weeks of events and celebrations!

This is only the beginning so make sure to check back for more photographic recaps from Static Photography!

In case you missed it, here is our first photo essay about 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics. Thanks to Vancouver Access, Culture at the Olympics and the LA Times for republishing our first 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics photo essay!

Deadline Approachin to Get Yer Photos Included in Vancouver Olympics

The deadline is quickly approaching for the end of submissions to the Canada CODE website as part of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games. Canada CODE is part of the digital edition, CODE, of the 2010 Cultural Olympiad. CODE is made up of four parts: CODE Live, an 18 music and digital media festival, CODE Screens 2010, an interactive journey that brings the art to your home computer, CODE Motion Pictures, which is a film line-up of commissioned short films from Canadian filmmakers and Canada CODE, a user-generated photo, text and remix experience. The coolest thing is that all of the content that is uploaded to the Canada CODE website, including remixes, will be put into a pool of potential material that could appear on the giant projection screens during the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games.

The 2010 Cultural Olympiad kicked off its 60 days of curated arts, music, and theatre events for the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics this past weekend in the city. One of the shows that was brought to Vancouver for the Cultural Olympiad was Elizabeth Streb‘s dance theater piece titled STREB: RAW. Elizabeth Streb is a performer and choreographer who focuses on human movement that flirts with risk. STREB: RAW is a performance piece that pushes the boundaries of human capabilities and challenges extreme human ability to attain flight.

Elizabeth Streb - Pop!Tech 2007

Kris Krüg from Static Photography had the opportunity to meet Elizabeth Streb in 2007 when she spoke at the PopTech conference in Camden, ME. During her talk at the conference in Maine, Elizabeth spoke about her fascination with human flight and how that has manifested in her performance career.

Backgrounder: Whistler Sliding Centre – Environmental Screening Process

Overview

The environmental assessment for the Whistler Sliding Centre project on Blackcomb Mountain in Whistler was conducted by Federal Department of Canadian Heritage under the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act (CEEA). The screening commenced in September, 2004 and was completed on June 1, 2005.

A number of local, provincial and federal agencies participated in the extensive review of the project including: VANOC, Squamish First Nation, Lil’wat First Nation, BC Ministry of Sustainable Resource Management, BC Ministry of Forests, Land and Water BC, Vancouver Regional Health Authority, Environment Canada and the Canadian Wildlife Service, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency, Health Canada, Natural Resources Canada – Geographical Survey of Canada, BC Ministry of Water, Land and Air Protection, Resort Municipality of Whistler, and Whistler-Blackcomb (Intrawest).

In consideration of VANOC’s implementation of mitigation measures, commitments and assurances, Canadian Heritage, as the federal Responsible Authority, has determined that the proposed Whistler Sliding Centre is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects. Construction of the facility can now begin.

Location

The Whistler Sliding Centre will be the venue for bobsleigh, luge and skeleton competitions during the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. It will feature a 1,450 meter track and access road. The venue will occupy approximately 15.6 hectares of Crown land. The land required for the project is currently under long term tenure to Intrawest, the operator of Whistler and Blackcomb Mountain ski operations. VANOC has received approval in principle from the Province of British Columbia, Intrawest and the Resort Municipality of Whistler for use of the site.

Size, Scope and Phasing of the project

Construction of the Whistler Sliding Centre will include land preparation, road and parking lot improvements, track construction, infrastructure construction and the installation of a track refrigeration plant. Track and access road construction will require forest clearing, mainly within an area of second growth forest.

Scheduling

VANOC is planning Whistler Sliding Centre construction so that the venue is operational for test events and athlete training beginning in the winter 2007/2008 season. Construction will take place over a 28 month time frame commencing on June 6, 2005 and continuing until October 2007. Most of the track-related construction will be completed during 2006 and 2007.

Conditions of the CEAA Screening Determination

As a result of the CEAA screening and review, VANOC has provided a number of commitments to protect the environment. These measures include:

- surveys of nesting birds will be conducted in advance of tree clearing
- removal old growth trees will be avoided wherever possible
- water quality will be monitored

Torino 2006 Winter Olympics Check-in

British Columbia Canada PlaceI’ve been in Italy for 3 days now and am starting to finally get caught-up on some of my posting. Long days and long nights is the way we roll and I’ve been getting a lil backlogged on posting the many things we’ve been involved with. I have a few minutes and want to point you guys to a few of the things you should check out. First, our symposium on the Olympics and Web 2.0 is tomorrow and it’s going to be awesome. Andy is here, many many media people will be be attending and we’re going to be lucky if we can fit everyone inside the venue we have reserved inside BC Canada Place here in Torino. Here’s the overview of the event.

The Olympics and Web 2.0

Friday, February 17th, 2006
BC Canada Place, Torino, Italia

Join Bryght and Raincity Studios in Torino for a half-day symposium in BC Canada Place in Torino exploring the intersection of sports and web 2.0. Chaired by Andy Miah and Kris Krug this event aims to explore how changes in technology and the internet are influencing media and the coverage of the games. Topics to be discussed include citizen journalism, the decentralisation of media power, user generated content, mobile devices and applications and open-source software.

Presenters include Boris Mann, Andy Miah, and Robert Scales.

Sign-up today to attend the event.

Attendees

The best way to follow along with our trip is going to be to check out Scales, Boris, and my Flickr photostreams. I’ve also created a Torino 2006 set over Flickr. We’ve also been uploading videos to YouTube.com (kk @ YouTube, Scales @ YouTube, Boris @ YouTube) as often as we have solid connectivity to the internet… which has been pretty sketchy in general.

Here’s an interview with the Hudson Bay company design and retail team that I did at an Italian resturant the other night. It’s been super popular on YouTube, getting a hundred views in the first hour or so it was on the web. The beautiful blonde sitting next to me is a 3 time Canadian olympic swimmer… but I forgot her name. :(
